Since your phone is the camera that is going to be used as a daily driver  It is imperative that you choose wisely, or if someone is deciding to go for an upgrade. Smartphone cameras have significantly improved over the period of time. Most of the people are now using smartphone cameras in place of digital cameras and DSLR’s this is due to obvious reasons as smartphone cameras are much more versatile, sophisticated and pack a lot of performance.

So this year smartphones camera’s rat race has been reached a new level and there is very less difference between the cameras the smartphones are offering are top notch and most of the manufacturers are spending millions of dollars in Research and Development.  The difference is merely objective difference and performance features like better or less dynamic range or more or fewer megapixels. It is more about personal preference to be very honest that which type of photo you like more some users may like the natural color or feel of a photo while some may like high saturation or overexposed images.

Best Camera Phones 2018

So, enough with the discussion now. Here is our list of the best smartphone cameras 2018

1) IPhone X

Apple’s newly designed iPhone X is the most spectacular thing that has ever been to the market and not just that because of the new bezel-less design which itself is the most creative design of all times,  it has great new software features and above all, a better camera which has significantly improved from the past.

Comming to the software here, IOS 11 is out in the market which is designed pretty well for the iPhone users. But definitely, it will run smoother on iPhone X than any other. Let’s just focus on the main thing here and that is the camera. Apple recently introduced a new dual lens arrangement in its camera setup in iPhone X this has been the first time that Apple has decided to go for dual lens configuration, unlike its previous iterations

The iPhone X has a Dual 12-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus with OIS, 2x optical zoom and features a quad LED dual-tone flash. It has features like Geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video, 8MP image recording, face/smile detection and of course HDR (photo/panorama). Talking about the video it has

  • 2160p@24/30/60 frames per second
  • 1080p@30/60/120/240 frames per second.

With the new software and camera features, Apple has now introduced (Augmented Reality)  in its camera which is very cool. According to one of the claims made by Apple after introducing the new A11 bionic chip and machine learning has made it possible for the camera to detect the scene even before the picture is even taken. The camera has the following features like:

  • deeper pixels,
  • new color filters
  • Larger and faster sensor.

Now there is one cool feature we all are missing here and that is the new portrait mode. It can take great photos but this time with the new portrait mode you can define light. By defining light we mean is that you can change front and backlighting effects based on fundamental photographic principles. Portrait mode has the features like:

  • Studio light effects,
  • Contour light,
  • Stage light
  • Stage light mono.

We think this is the best camera feature Apple has come up with which makes this camera unique and in a league of its own.

This was the rear camera we were talking about, now let’s see the front or the secondary one. Front camera in iPhone X is 7 megapixel, f/2.2, 1080p@360/60/120/240 frames per second.

iPhone X is water resist with IP 67 however we were expecting IP 68 this time. This means that you have no problem of taking pictures in the pool or during rain.

Due to all these features, iPhone X is included in our Best Camera Phones 2018 list.

2) iPhone 8 Plus

Here is another apple product which was launched on 12th September 2017 along with iPhone X. Talking about Software features it is running IOS 11 same as the iPhone X. But our main concern is the camera. So Apple launched this new device with the same shaped camera as the iPhone 7 plus. But wait, this camera definitely has the juice to make you all surprise.

iPhone 8 plus camera features the same megapixels as the iPhone X. However  digging deep into the details, here are the features of the iPhone 8 plus camera.

  • Dual 12 megapixels, (28mm, f/1.8, OIS & 56mm, f/2.8
  • Phase detection autofocus.
  • 2x Optical Zoom
  • Quad LED dual-tone flash.
  • 1/3” sensor size.
  • Simultaneous 4K video recording and 8MP image recording.
  • Touch focus
  • Face/smile detection
  • HDR (photo/panorama)

The above features we’ve discussed are pretty much the same as the iPhone X. It has a new improved sensor that is faster that gives both the lenses 12 megapixel image quality. The color quality in the photos is really good with the true tone even in low light conditions.

Talking again about the portrait lighting the iPhone 8 plus uses its dual cameras to create a depth map of a person’s face allowing you to change the lighting. Here are the Portrait mode features in detail.

  • Studio light effects,
  • Contour light,
  • Stage light
  • Stage light mono.

This was the rear camera we were talking about. Now let’s talk about the front-facing camera.

iPhone 8 plus the front-facing camera is a 7 megapixel with f/2.2, 1080p@30 frames per second. The front-facing camera also features face detection, HDR, and panorama.

iPhone 8 plus is water resist with IP 67 however we were expecting IP 68 this time. This means that you have no problem of taking pictures in pool or in rain but not for long

Due to all these characteristics, iPhone 8 Plus is included in our list of Best Camera Phones.

3) Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Samsung recently introduced the new product in their Note series which was the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Now talking about the overall phone and design, we have to be very honest here and we think it’s a gorgeous phone. It is running Android OS.

Getting straight towards the big thing now and yes you guessed it right the first Samsung phone featuring a dual lens camera. Both are 12-megapixel cameras. Here Samsung has added a second 12-megapixel telephoto lens that gives you 2x optical zoom. Not only this but it is the only phone to include optical image stabilization unlike the One plus 5 and iPhone 7 plus, so even if you zoom in a little it’s smooth.

The aperture is now on the zoom lens f/2.4 which makes it good in low light condition. To be very honest here it is one of the best camera phones out there in the market. Photos clicked with Samsung Galaxy Note 8 are rich, detailed with great color and obviously, HDR has excellent dynamic range. The same can be said for videos too which are sharp especially in 4K and smooth thanks to that stabilization.

Although we must mention here is that although it’s a great camera but at some places it was a little below average when tested at night or low light conditions. Beside this there are 2 things that makes the Note 8 stand out the 2x optical zoom and the new live focus mode which is the like the portrait mode and gives photos a very cool shallow depth of field.

The live focus mode can be a little temperamental telling you that it cannot be used and the second moment it can be used which we are sure is not a big problem, maybe some software issues in the camera app. You can also adjust the level of blur before and after taking the picture. The dual capture lets you shoot multiple photos so that you can choose the best one. However, the live focus mode was not very appreciated as it does not support HDR in it.

Here are the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera features.

  • Dual 12 megapixels with 26mm, f/1.7 and 52mm, f/2.4
  • Autofocus
  • 2x optical zoom
  • Dual LED dual tone flash
  • ½.55” sensor size
  • Simultaneous 4K video and 9MP Image recording
  • Touch focus
  • Face/smile detection
  • Auto HDR
  • Panorama

Now let’s talk about the front-facing camera. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 features an 8MP front-facing camera with f/1.7, autofocus, 1/3.6” sensor size, 1440p@30 frames per second, dual video call and Auto HDR.

Due to all these characteristics and features Galaxy Note 8 is included in our Top Camera Phones 2018 list.

4) Samsung Galaxy S8

Another flagship phone recently introduced from Samsung from the S series lineup was the S8. Now when the phone first came up it had everything which you could expect from a flagship device. Overall it had a beautiful bezel-less OLED screen and many awesome features.

S8 like its predecessors packs a 12-megapixel rear camera with a wide f/1.7 aperture that kind of let us think that if this is the same sensor, but it turns out it that it has a marginally updated sensor with a bit of Samsung software changes underneath. The performance however was good in day light as well as in low light conditions. S8 comes up with a great fast autofocus which is superior to most of the phones in the clan. Camera is not very much changed from the last generation. The interface is about the same prioritizing the swipe sensors and gestures to keep shooting as easy and one-handed as possible. The video recording has improved even in 4K where the video resolutions looks great. Other modes included in the camera app is pretty much the same as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Plus. But you can record 1080p video at 60 frames per second which is the main addition in the app when comes to the video side of the things.

Here are the features of the S8 rear camera.

  • 12 megapixel with f/1.7, 26mm
  • Phase detection autofocus
  • LED flash
  • 1/2.5” sensor size
  • Simultaneous 4k video recording and 9MP image recording
  • 2160p@ 30 frames per second and 1080p@ 60 frames per second
  • Dual video recording
  • HDR

Talking about the front facing camera which is an 8 megapixel with f/1.7 and we were very pleased to see the auto focus in the front camera which is very cool.

Here are the features of a front-facing camera of Samsung Galaxy S8.

  • 8 megapixel with f/1.7, 26mm
  • Autofocus
  • 1440p@ 30 frames per second
  • Dual Video Call
  • Auto HDR

5) LG V30

This is the phone which they are calling the cinema quality phone. Presenting the new LG V30 which is a gem of a phone. With a complete bezel-less design LG comes into the competition of bezel-less smartphones with Samsung and now Apple iPhone X. First picking up the LG V30 we think and feel that it is a matured version of LG G6. Metallic on the sides and gorilla glass on the front made V30 a unique phone itself with tons of other features.

The phone now has a 6-inch quad HD plus OLED screen that covers almost 82% of the front. But you will be very surprised to hear this that it is not the screen that makes this smartphone good, but LG is most proud of its new dual cameras in the V30.

We all love LG’s approach of having a second 13-megapixel shooter. A dual lens camera which is one 16 megapixel and other one is a 13-megapixel camera. These dual lens helps you to zoom in to take the same quality picture with the help of second wide angle camera. The main shooter which is 16 megapixel has the brightest aperture on any mobile phone in the market with f/1.6. The camera app allows you take pictures very fast and due to this it is included in our top camera phones.

LG packs it with a full manual mode and a video mode. It allows you to choose pretty cool image effects. The image quality is great in daylight as well as in low light conditions and at night. The image shows plenty of details when zoomed in showing the quality of the dual lenses. The one flaw we think was the exposure and dynamic range was not always accurate, but we think LG will come up with a fix soon in a software updated maybe. Other than this the phone is remarkable to use as well. The camera allows recording full 4K video which was great.

Here are the features if LG V30 rear-facing cameras.

  • Dual 16 megapixel (f/1.6, OIS, 3 axis laser) + 13 megapixel (f/1.9 with no autofocus).
  • Phase detection Autofocus
  • HDR
  • Panorama
  • 4K video recording
  • 2160@ 30 frames per second and 1080p@ 30 frames per second and 720p @ 120 frames per second.
  • HDR video

LG V30 comes with a 5MP front-facing camera with f/2.2 and 1/5” sensor size.

LG V30 is also waterproof with IP 68 certified dust and waterproof over 1.5 meters and 30 minutes.

6) One Plus 5

One thing we need to tell you that OnePlus is our personal favorite but let’s dig in deep to find out what makes this phone unique enough to compete with the other big guns. One plus 5 was a small company that started with some pretty basic stuff and now it stands amongst the high-end smart-phone manufacturers. Talking about this particular device One plus 5, we were kind of expecting a bezel-less or small bezel screen in this phone but this was not the case with one plus 5

Getting towards the main thing one plus 5 is one of those phones which has the dual lens camera. The photo quality when picked it up and tested was very interesting. The dual lens camera is very interesting as if you see the box of one plus 5, it’s actually on the box as “Dual Camera, Clearer photos”. So by this it means that this is the main thing they want you to focus on and due to this it is included in our top camera phones 2018.

The primary camera is 16 mega pixel f/1.7 with a new tele photo lens of 20 mega pixel with f/2.6 as a secondary camera. We were very surprised to see the camera app that looks just like the iPhone Camera app. But no worries if the camera quality is better, who cares about the design of the camera app. The camera gives you a 2x zoom which shows the same sharpness of the image when you zoom out. The camera shows great quality when tested in daylight and same goes for the low light conditions. The sensor is capable of getting really great images. We wish it could have that optical image stabilization but it does not have it.

Here are the features of the rear camera of one plus 5.

  • Dual 16 megapixels with f/1.7 + 20 megapixel with f/2.6 aperture.
  • Phase detection, Auto focus
  • 6x optical zoom
  • Dual LED flash

  • Panorama
  • 4K video recording
  • 2130p @ 30 frames per second, 1080p@ 30/60 frames per second and 720p@ 20/120 frames per second.

Talking about front camera which is a 16 mega pixel shooter which takes great quality images and selfies. They managed to put a remarkably good front camera in it which surprises you with some really great photos.

Here are the features of the front-facing camera of one plus 5.

  • 16 mega pixel, f/2.0
  • 1080p
  • Auto HDR

These features made One Plus 5 included to our best Camera Phone Guide.

7) HTC U11

We are nearly at the halfway point of the year and couple great smartphones have the market with their great features. With the HTC U11 say goodbye to the metal design and say hello to the liquid surface design language.

We all know that HTC’s design quality is one the best, and this time around again they came up with a great beautiful design. It’s a mirror design that kind of looks great in the hand. This liquid design language is a step up what we see in the LG G6 but it is very tough to say that it is better looking than the Samsung Galaxy S8. The Software experience is very similar to the previous U ultra.  They added a new thing called HTC edge sense by shortening the edges of the phones it allows quick access to certain functions.

Moving on to the camera there is a 12-megapixel ultra-pixel single shooter camera in the rear which features an OIS, a dual LED flash and a f/1.7 aperture lens. Testing it by hands on it’s a great camera as always by HTC which takes great photos in the light and couple great photos capturing in the dark. It shoots a 4K video that looks really sharp and detailed.

Here are the features of the rear camera of the HTC U11 that makes this phone included in our top camera phones 2018 guide.

  • 12 mega pixel, f/1.7
  • Phase detection auto focus.
  • OIS
  • Dual LED dual tone Flash.
  • Touch focus
  • Face detection
  • HDR
  • Panorama

Front facing camera is a 16 mega pixel camera with a back side aluminate sensor. HTC assures that this is one the top most in the benchmark test.

Here are the features of the front facing camera.

  • 16 mega pixel with f/2.0

Sony comes back with its new flag ship phone and that is the new Sony Xperia XZ1. Sony has made a big push this year to gain some attention in the US market and the Xperia XZ1 is their new flagship for the second half of 2017.

From the design perspective XZ1 features Sony’s well know square design which was very popular design until the bezel fewer phones came into the market. We personally think that Sony should know step up to a new design. This is an improved design with strong materials. The side body is a metal one making the XZ1 feels more resistant against twisting and bending. Sony as always is water proof with IP 68 certified.

We cannot ignore Sony in terms of the cameras because that would be the biggest mistake to underestimate Sony’s camera technology which is an all-time favorite. The camera is one of the phones most noticeable features. It’s a 19 mega pixel with super slow motion capabilities. It has auto focus burst feature in it. It features 4K video recording which records remarkable good videos. It performs as great in daylight as well as in low light conditions.
